Emergence in Organisational Teams
Creating the conditions for team development
Central to the living systems view of teams, networks and organisations, is the recognition and acceptance that their behaviour 'emerges' rather than appears in a controllable, predictable way.
Even though we may not be able to make the desired team behaviour emerge to suit our plans and schedules we can create conditions which are conducive to emergence.
Richard Seel in an excellent paper, Emergence in Organisations, suggests the following seven ‘conditions for organisational emergence’:
- Connectivity
- Diversity
- Rate of Information Flow
- Lack of inhibitors
- Good Boundaries
- Intentionality
- Watchful Anticipation
