Virtual team collaboration saves lives!
UK government sets up organisation to promote “meeting without moving”.
The terrible human cost of business travel
According to John Blackwell, Chief Executive of The Meeting Without Moving Foundation (MwM), speaking at the Collaboration in Financial Services Conference in London, June 16:
“on average over 3,500 people are killed on British roads each year - the equivalent of 10 every day and around 30% of these are work related - thats nearly a thousand business people killed each year in the UK through work-related travel”
Meeting without Moving (MwM)
MwM is a not-for-profit organisation, chaired by Noel Edmonds the TV Presenter, which is conducting a nationwide high profile campaign to create a new work and travel culture in the UK.
MwM is supported by safety and environmental pressure groups; business support organisations; large corporations and individual Government departments.
The human cost of business travel is not even the whole cost!
Awful as the fatalities are the total cost of business travel is more than just road deaths for example:
Environmental
The UK is facing a major energy crisis and a pressing need to make a contribution to the global reduction of CO2 emissions. An integrated, efficient transport network without delays caused by congestion, essential works or terrorist threats, cannot be delivered without staggering investment and vast damage to the environment.
Business Productivity
The ability of Virtual Working technologies such as Video Conferencing to slash costs and boost business efficiency is difficult to challenge.
Work Life Balance
In addition to the reduction of ‘at-work travel’ risks, and freeing up non-productive time of valued staff, further evolution and enforcement of the EU Working Time Directive (48 hours maximum week including travel) is already placing greater significance upon the need to balance work priorities as well as personal commitments.
Virtual Teaming is a real 'no brainer'!
So developing the infrastructure and skills to allow you to participate in your work in an effective virtual manner is safer, better for the environment, better for your home life and better for your organisations productivity!
